AdBlue SCR Off on Euro 6 Diesels: EDC17C64, EDC17C74, MD1 and CRD3 on Passat, Octavia, W213

22 October 2026 4 min read

The cluster on a 2016 Passat B8 2.0 TDI reads ‘AdBlue: no engine start possible in 950 km’. The tank is full. The tester shows P20EE (SCR NOx conversion efficiency below threshold) and P229F on the downstream NOx sensor. The owner has already paid for one NOx sensor; the second one is on backorder and costs more than the car’s annual insurance. This is the point where a workshop starts asking about AdBlue off.

How the countdown works and why it’s not a bluff

Euro 6 diesels with SCR must, by type approval, refuse to start when the reductant system is empty or tampered. The ECU runs a countdown in kilometres (VAG: typically from around 2,400 km down to 0; Mercedes counts down in starts on early BlueTEC and in km on later cars). It’s triggered by level, by quality (a wrong fluid detected through the NOx model), by a dosing fault, or by an SCR efficiency fault that persists over several cycles. Once it hits zero the ECU blocks the starter after the next switch-off. Clearing codes only pauses it; the counter is stored in the engine ECU and, on some cars, mirrored in the cluster.

What usually fails

  • NOx sensors (upstream and downstream), the most common failure on EA288 and OM651/OM654. Codes P2200, P2201, P229F, P2209 (heater).
  • The dosing pump or supply module. Codes P20E8 (pressure too low), P204F (system performance), P20B9 (heater control).
  • The tank heater and level/quality sensor. Codes P203F, P20A0/P20A1, P20A7 (heater).
  • Crystallised injector nozzle, especially on short-trip vans, reported as P20EE or a dosing quantity plausibility fault.
  • Repeated P20EE with all parts good: usually a poisoned or ash-loaded SCR catalyst, a dealer-only fix at several thousand euros.

What the solution removes

A proper AdBlue off on EDC17C64/C74 disables the dosing strategy (the injector is no longer driven), the NOx sensor evaluation, the SCR efficiency monitor and the reductant countdown, and sets the substitute values so the rest of the emission strategy (EGR, DPF regeneration, boost) keeps running normally. The physical parts can stay in place; on many jobs they do, so the car looks stock. The cluster message disappears once the ECU stops requesting it. The DPF is untouched, regeneration still happens.

What it doesn’t do: it doesn’t fix an EGR or DPF fault sitting underneath, and it doesn’t lower NOx. Real-world NOx goes up by a large factor, which is the whole reason the law treats it the way it does.

ECU families and what to expect

  • Bosch EDC17C64 (VAG EA288 2.0 TDI, Audi A6 C7, Octavia III, Passat B8): the most requested unit. Reference reads on our shelves include AUDI A6 EDC17C64 04L997022A 3913 10SW013728 and SKODA OCTAVIA EDC17C64 04L997021 1646 10SW000811. Read by OBD with KESS3 or Autotuner on most software versions; later 10SW numbers need bench.
  • Bosch EDC17C74 (Passat B8, Golf VII, Tiguan): VW PASSAT EDC17C74 04L906026 3162 10SW009685, VW ALL EDC17C74 04L906026NQ 4713 10SW022004. Same structure, different addresses.
  • Bosch MD1CP001 (Mercedes OM654 in W213, W222, Vito) and MD1CS001 (BMW B47): MERCEDES W213 MD1CP001 0281033490 6549039903 10SW002363, BMW 520D G30 MD1CS001 0281033065 10SW002443. Bench or boot only, and on MD1 the file works together with a tuning-protection patch.
  • Delphi CRD3 (Mercedes OM651 Euro 6 in W205, W212 facelift, W246): MERCEDES C200 W205 CRD3 6519014502 6519030866, MERCEDES E220 W212 CRD3 0064461540 6519037009. Solid solution, but the countdown on these can also be pinned in the cluster on some model years; send a cluster photo.
  • Denso (Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser 2.8 D-4D, Mazda SkyActiv-D, Isuzu D-Max Euro 6): possible on most, needs the full flash and often the EEPROM; longer turnaround.

Legality and inspection in the EU

Disabling an SCR system on a road-going vehicle is illegal in every EU state. In Germany it voids the operating permit under the StVZO, in the Netherlands and Belgium roadside NOx checks on vans are now common, and trucks with ‘AdBlue emulators’ get fleet-level fines. At periodic inspection the OBD readiness check will pass with a clean file, but a physical check of the dosing injector connector or a tailpipe NOx sniff won’t. We supply these files for export, off-road, agricultural and test-bench use, and we say so on the product. If the car has to pass a European inspection every year, fix the sensor.

To order, send the full ECU read (not an OBD partial), the VIN, the current km countdown from the cluster and the stored codes via the request form. Model pages: EDC17C64, EDC17C74, CRD3.
