Bosch EDC17C08 Immo Off and Original Files for Hyundai i40, Accent and Kia Sportage CRDi

16 October 2026 4 min read

Hyundai i40 1.7 CRDi, 2013, cranks and won’t start after a used engine ECU went in. The label: Bosch 0281019574, Hyundai 39120-2A222, EDC17C08. The used unit was bought because the original had a burnt track after a jump-start gone wrong, and the seller said plug and play. It isn’t, and on this ECU there are two clean ways to deal with it.

Where EDC17C08 is fitted

EDC17C08 is Bosch’s Tricore diesel ECU for the Hyundai/Kia U2 and R-series engines from roughly 2010 to 2016: i40 1.7 CRDi, i30 and Ceed 1.4/1.6 CRDi, Accent RB 1.6 CRDi, ix35 and Sportage 1.7/2.0 CRDi, and Sorento and Santa Fe on some 2.0/2.2 builds before EDC17C57 took over. The immobiliser side is SMARTRA 3, with the ECU holding a coded link to the antenna module and the key.

From our shelf:

  • HYUNDAI I40 EDC17C08 0281019574 39120-2A222 1037526046 IMMO OFF DUMP
  • HYUNDAI I40 EDC17C08 0281019574 39120-2A222 1037526046 DUMP
  • HYUNDAI ACCENT EDC17C08 0281018095 1037522438 IMMO OFF DUMP
  • HYUNDAI ACCENT EDC17C08 0281018095 1037522438 DUMP
  • KIA SPORTAGE EDC17C08 0281017695 1037512589 DUMP
  • KIA SPORTAGE EDC17C08 0281017046 1037510091 IMMO OFF DUMP

Where we have both, the listings come in pairs: the plain DUMP is the full original, the IMMO OFF DUMP is the same software with the SMARTRA check removed. Match the 0281 number and the 1037 software number; the 391xx Hyundai number is a bonus if it’s on your label.

Route one: keep the immobiliser

A used EDC17C08 is paired to its donor’s SMARTRA. On these cars the pairing can be reset and redone with the dealer tool (GDS with the security PIN) or with a key tool that supports Hyundai SMARTRA 3 (Zed-Full, Tango, AVDI on most versions). The ECU needs to be in a neutral state for that: either genuinely new, or virginised. Our full original file written to the used ECU, followed by the SMARTRA learn with the vehicle’s PIN, gives you a car with a working immobiliser and no trace of the donor. This is what we recommend for a road car in the EU.

Route two: immo off

The immo off file removes the SMARTRA check from the engine software. The car starts on any key that turns the barrel. It’s the answer when the SMARTRA module is dead and not worth replacing, when the PIN isn’t obtainable, or for engines going into boats, generators and off-road builds. It’s not the answer for a car that’s going to be parked on a street in Istanbul or Milan, and if your customer’s insurer asks after a theft, ‘the ECU has no immobiliser’ is not a good sentence. Say it before you write it.

Procedure, either route

  1. Try OBD first. KESS V2, Autotuner and FoxFlash read EDC17C08 through the diagnostic socket on most software versions in about eight minutes. Save the read as your fallback.
  2. If OBD fails (TPROT active on later 1037 numbers, or a dead unit), go to bench: KTAG, Flex or KT200 with the EDC17 Tricore adapter. Boot mode with the GPT pin if the unit has been half-written before.
  3. Write the original or the immo off file for your 0281 and 1037 combination. The file comes with checksums corrected; a tool that insists on recalculating is fine, but don’t let it apply a generic correction on a unit it doesn’t fully recognise.
  4. Route one only: refit and run the SMARTRA learn with the PIN. Route two: refit, clear codes, start.
  5. Drive it. Any injector quantity correction codes stored from the donor car will clear over a few cycles; if they don’t, the software version is wrong.

The i40 in the opening paragraph: the used ECU had a 1037 number one revision older than the car’s, and the original read from the burnt unit was still possible on the bench (the burnt track was on the power side, the flash was intact). So we simply wrote the car’s own full bench read, flash and EEPROM, into the used unit, which is a clone in effect, and the SMARTRA pairing came across with it. No learn, no PIN, no immo off. When the old unit can still be read, always try that first.

Find the files on the EDC17C08 page or via the immo off and original file categories. Missing number? The request form with your read attached is the way; we usually answer the same day.
