EDC17CP44 and EDC17CP54 original files for Audi A4 B8, A6 C7 and Q7 4M 3.0 TDI
The Audi A6 C7 3.0 TDI on the ramp shows 8K5907589 on the ECU and the flashing tool reports software 0006. The used replacement the customer bought online is 8K5907589 as well, but 0004. Same part, different software, and the car now has a P0606 and no start after someone tried to “just write the file”. That’s the everyday EDC17CP44 story, and the Q7 4M with EDC17CP54 adds Component Protection on top.
Which engines use them
EDC17CP44 is the 3.0 V6 TDI controller across the B8 and C7 platforms: A4 and A5 B8, A6 and A7 C7, Q5 8R, and on some versions the Touareg 7P and Cayenne 92A. The 8K5907589 numbers cover A4 B8 and A6 C7 3.0 TDI (CDUC, CLAB, CKVB, CRTD and related codes). EDC17CP54 belongs to the Q7 4M 3.0 TDI (CRTC, CRTE) from 2015, with 4M0907401 numbers. Both are Tricore TC1797 units with 4 MB of flash.
Software versions and why 0004 isn’t 0008
Audi kept the part number and bumped the software index as updates rolled out: 0001, 0004, 0005, 0006, 0008. Each has its own Bosch software ID. What’s on our shelves:

A later version isn’t a drop-in for an earlier one. The dataset, the coding block and the calibration ID differ, and the gateway checks the calibration ID against what the car expects. Writing an 0008 file over an 0004 ECU with a partial OBD write leaves a mismatch that ODIS flags as an SVM error even if the engine runs.
Reading: OBD versus bench
Early CP44 (up to about 2014, the 0001 to 0005 range) reads and writes over OBD with KESS3, Autotuner, Flex and KT200. Later software and most CP54 units have the OBD tuning lock, and the read has to be done on the bench: Flex, KT200, FoxFlash or New Trasdata in bench mode, ECU out, connector plate on, no opening required. Boot mode is the fallback if the bench read fails or the ECU is already half dead. The bench and boot guide covers the wiring.
Immo and Component Protection
Audi B8 onward runs Immo 4 and later Immo 5, and the engine ECU is also on the Component Protection list. A used ECU fitted to another car will start with an immo off file, but Component Protection stays flagged in the gateway until it’s cleared online with ODIS and a dealer login, or by a tool that handles CP offline (AVDI covers a number of these). So plan for two steps on a Q7 4M ECU swap: our immo off or virgin file to get the engine running, and a CP removal to get rid of the warning and restore full function. Immo off on the customer’s own ECU, with the original cluster, is simpler: a recovery job, nothing more.
Recovery after a failed flash
- Don’t keep retrying OBD. Each attempt with the wrong file adds nothing, and the tool may write partial blocks.
- Read the ECU on the bench or in boot mode. Even a bricked CP44 will usually give a full read.
- Check the software ID in what you read (the 10SW or 1037 string). If it’s readable, order the matching original from us.
- Write the full original. Include the external EEPROM only if you also read it. Clear codes, do a basic setting, and check for SVM entries with VCDS.
If the ECU doesn’t respond in boot mode at all, it’s usually hardware (a shorted supply from a reverse-connected plate is the classic) and no file will fix it. Also worth saying: a 3.0 TDI that starts and runs rough after a swap is often a mismatched injector coding or a dataset problem, not a dead ECU. Read the fault memory before pulling it out again.
The EDC17CP44 and EDC17CP54 model pages list every version we hold by software index. Send your bench read and the label through the request form if you can’t tell which one you need, and the bricked ECU guide covers the rest of the recovery.
