Ford ECU Part Numbers Explained: 12A650, 12B684 and the Suffix Letters That Decide Which File Fits
Ford part numbers look cryptic until you know the pattern. For ECU files the pattern is everything: two units with the same Siemens or Bosch hardware can carry different Ford numbers, and the last letters tell you which software is inside. This guide reads a Ford ECU part number piece by piece.
The structure
A typical Ford (Europe) engine ECU number is 7M51-12A650-AKC:
- 7M51 — the prefix. The first character is the model year decade digit (7 = 2007 design), the letter shows the design source and the vehicle line (M = Focus/C-Max family, S = Fiesta/Fusion, G = Mondeo/S-Max/Galaxy, T = Transit), and the last digit the platform.
- 12A650 — the base number. 12A650 is the engine control module. Related base numbers: 12B684 (control module on some diesel and Transit applications), 12A659 (PCM on older US-style numbering), 14C204 (body control).
- AKC — the suffix. This is the revision and software level. It changes with every calibration release: AA, AB, … AK, then AKA, AKB, AKC. A file for suffix JC is not a file for suffix KC.
What the suffix tells you
The suffix is the only part that separates software versions on the same hardware. On a Focus II 1.6 TDCi you may see 5M51-12A650-JC, -KC and -LD on the same SID803A; each is a different calibration (emissions level, gearbox, market). Always order the file for the exact suffix on your label, or send the read for matching.
Mapping to the ECU maker
- Siemens/Continental: SID803A (1.6 TDCi, e.g. 5M51-12A650-xx), SID206 (1.8/2.0 TDCi, 6M51-/7M51-12A650-xx), SID807EVO (1.6 TDCi Euro 5, AV21-/BV61-12A650-xx). The Siemens number 5WS40xxx is printed next to the Ford number.
- Bosch: EDC16C34 (1.6 TDCi 109 hp, 4M51-12A650-xx), EDC16C3 (2.0 TDCi Mondeo III), EDC17C10 (Fiesta/Focus 1.6 TDCi later), MED17.2 (EcoBoost, e.g. AV21-12A650-xx), with the Bosch number 0 281 0xx xxx / 0 261 Sxx xxx.
- Visteon/Delphi: DCM3.5 (1.6 TDCi 95 hp, 9M5A-12A650-xx) and older Visteon petrol units on the Ka and Fiesta.
Reading the label in practice
- Find the Ford number (starts with the prefix, contains 12A650 or 12B684).
- Find the maker’s number (5WS…, 0 281…, 28xxxxxx) — this tells you which reading method applies.
- Note the full suffix; compare it on the product page. If your suffix is not listed, use the closest one only after checking with us — a wrong suffix can write successfully and still cause a no-start or a limp mode.
Where to look
All Ford files are listed with the complete Ford number; narrow down by ECU model: SID206, SID803A, SID807EVO, EDC16C34, DCM3.5. Suffix not there? The file request form with a label photo and your read is the fastest way to get the matching version.
