Immobilizer Emulator or Immo Off File? Julie, Carlabimmo, ESL/ELV Emulators Compared With Files

1 November 2026 4 min read

Renault Clio II, Sirius 32, immobiliser light flashing, no start, and the UCH has been flooded. Two ways to get it moving today: an immobiliser emulator on the ECU’s immo line, or an immo off file written into the ECU. Both work. They fail in different ways, cost different money later, and one of them is a lot easier to explain to the next person who opens the bonnet.

What an emulator actually does

An emulator is a small board that answers the ECU’s immobiliser challenge the way the body module (UCH, BSI, immobox, EWS, ESL) would. The ECU keeps its original file and thinks it’s talking to the car. The common ones:

  • Julie emulator (and its many clones): universal, programmable for VAG, PSA, Renault, Fiat, Opel, Hyundai and others. Connects to the ECU’s K-line or W-line immo pin, power and ground, sometimes CAN on the newer profiles.
  • Carlabimmo: same idea, different maker, sold pre-configured per car family.
  • Mercedes ESL/ELV emulators: for the W204, W207, W212 steering lock. The ELV fails mechanically and electrically; the emulator replaces it and must be programmed with the car’s data from the EIS. Not an immo off, a component replacement.
  • VAG ELV emulators: Audi A6 C6, Q7, A8 steering lock (J518). Same story as the Mercedes one.
  • Fiat Code and Renault immo emulators: older, family-specific boards that predate the universal ones.

Most emulator profiles need the ECU EEPROM patched to an immo-off or immo-learned state as well, so the emulator’s fixed answer is accepted; on some families they need no ECU change at all. Read the instructions for the specific profile before wiring, because this is where most failures happen.

What an immo off file does

The file removes the immobiliser check from the ECU itself. No extra hardware, no wiring. The ECU starts on any key, or no key, and the dashboard immo light behaves according to what the body module thinks. Examples that get ordered every week:

  • Renault Clio Sirius 32, 8200044437 8200069287 IMMO OFF DUMP
  • VW Polo Simos 3PE, 03E906033 5WP40163 03 IMMO OFF DUMP
  • Peugeot 3008 MEV17.4, 0261S05863 9666922580 IMMO OFF DUMP
  • Kia Ceed M7.9.8, 0261S05598 39110-2B522 GED A44CFS0 IMMO OFF DUMP
  • Dacia Logan EMS3132, 8200326380 8200483739 IMMO OFF DUMP
  • Isuzu D-Max Transtron, 8982241424 98224142 IMMO OFF DUMP

Writing it needs a read first (EEPROM on the older ones, flash and EEPROM on EDC17/MED17) and a tool that can write the ECU: UPA, XProg or Orange5 on the EEPROM chip, KESS3, KTAG, Flex or BitBox for the flash.

When the emulator is the right call

  • The ECU can’t be read or written with what you have (locked bootloader, no bench pinout, no time).
  • The ECU must stay original: warranty on the unit, a tuned file you don’t want to touch, or a customer who will later want the immo back.
  • The failed part is the body module and the engine ECU is fine; the emulator bridges the gap until a proper UCH or BSI is fitted.
  • Mercedes and VAG steering locks, where there is no immo off file for the ESL/ELV as such.

When the file is the right call

  • Engine transplant into a different car or a stationary application (boat, generator, kit car) where there’s no body module to emulate.
  • Old car, low value, no keys, and the customer has accepted a permanently immo-less engine ECU.
  • Used ECU where a virgin file isn’t available but an immo off is.
  • Anywhere you don’t want an extra board and three wires under the dash for the next mechanic to find.

Cost, wiring and what happens in five years

An emulator is cheap to buy and takes an hour to fit properly (solder, heat-shrink, secure it, label it). Badly fitted ones are the intermittent no-start of the future: a cold joint on the K-line and the car dies at the fuel station. A file costs about the same, takes as long as the read and write, and leaves nothing to fail. Against that, the file is permanent unless you keep the original read (do keep it), and it changes what the car is: immo-less. In the EU that has to be disclosed on sale, and some insurers care. The emulator is at least reversible by unplugging it.

Neither one touches key programming. If the customer wants working keys and a working immo light, that’s UCH/BSI pairing or a virgin file plus keys, and we’d point you to our immo off explained guide first.

Immo off files are grouped under immo off, with immobiliser module dumps (UCH, BSI, immobox) under immobilizer. Read the immo off explained post before ordering if this is your first one, and send the read plus label through the request form if your ECU isn’t listed.
