Mercedes EDC16C2 Virgin File: Fitting a Used ECU to a W203, W211 or Vito W639 CDI
A 2006 Vito 111 CDI comes in on a recovery truck. It cranks, there is no communication with the engine ECU, and the owner has already bought a second-hand Bosch EDC16C2 from a breaker with the same numbers on the label, 0281012824 and A6461500178. He plugs it in, turns the key, and gets ‘start error’ on the dash. Nothing wrong with the used ECU. It simply belongs to another van.
Why a used EDC16C2 refuses to start a Mercedes
Practically every CDI Mercedes of this generation (W203 C220 CDI, W211 E220/E270/E320 CDI, Vito and Viano W639 with the OM646, OM647 and OM648 engines) runs FBS3, the third-generation drive authorisation system. At first ignition a new engine ECU learns the EIS (ignition switch) and its secret. From then on it answers only to that EIS. A second-hand EDC16C2 carries the FBS data of the donor car, so your EIS and the ECU never agree and injection stays blocked.
Three ways round it: repair the original, buy a new one from Mercedes and have it coded online, or return the used unit to a virgin state so it learns your EIS as if it were new. The virgin file is the third option, and the cheapest.
Virgin, original, immo off: which one for this ECU
People ask us for immo off on EDC16C2 Mercedes and we usually steer them away from it. Deleting FBS in the engine ECU alone doesn’t get a W211 running, because the EIS still expects a valid handshake before it releases the starter and the steering lock. A virgin file is the correct answer for an ECU swap. An original file is for a corrupted flash on an ECU that is still paired to the car. Immo off is for a bench engine or a vehicle where the whole FBS chain is being bypassed, which is rare and not something we’d recommend for a road car in the EU.

The Bosch number (0281…) identifies the hardware, the A-number is the Mercedes part, and the 1037… number is the software. Match the Bosch number as a minimum. Software can differ between a C220 and an E220 with the same hardware, so send us a photo of the label rather than guessing.
Bench procedure for a used unit
- Read the used ECU in full before anything else. On EDC16C2 that means flash and EEPROM. KTAG or a Flex on the bench does both; KESS V2 through OBD reads the flash on most of these but you’ll want the EEPROM too, so bench is the safer route. Keep that read; if the virgin write fails half-way it’s your way back.
- Write the virgin EEPROM (and the flash if we’ve supplied one for your software version). Checksums are corrected in the file, so don’t let the tool fix them a second time unless it asks.
- Fit the ECU, connect Xentry or DAS, and switch the ignition on with the car’s own key. On most versions the ECU personalises itself to the EIS within a few seconds; you’ll see the status change from ‘not activated’ to ‘activated’ in the FBS menu.
- Check SCN coding. A virgin EDC16C2 often needs its variant coding written again for the engine and gearbox combination, which is a dealer-online job or an offline SCN file if you have one.
What went wrong on the bench
A W203 came back with no start after a virgin write. The ECU had activated fine, but the EIS itself had a dead key position from a previous flood repair, so the handshake failed at the EIS end. An EIS check on Xentry would have shown it before anyone touched the ECU.
Another one: a Vito W639 with 0281012358 was flashed with a virgin file from a W211 with a different software number. It started and ran, then threw glow plug and swirl flap faults, because the software didn’t match the van’s hardware. Same Bosch number is not the same file.
The DPF and EGR modified version in the list above is the other thing customers ask about. On a Vito the swirl flap actuator and the EGR valve are common failures and a flap-off, EGR-off calibration removes the fault codes. This changes the emissions behaviour of the vehicle and isn’t legal for road use in most EU countries, including at inspection. We sell it for off-road and export use.
Ready to order? Browse the EDC16C2 files or the virgin category, or send the label photo and your full read through the request form and we’ll match the software number for you. For background on the difference between the file types, see original vs virgin vs FRF.
