Autotuner ECU Tool Guide: OBD Virtual Reads, Bench and Boot on EDC17, MED17, MG1 and MD1
A 2016 Golf 2.0 TDI is on the ramp, the label says 04L997021D 3905 10SW013730 (EDC17C64), and the Autotuner shows “Virtual Read” next to the OBD option. Nothing is wrong with the tool. That word is the whole story of how Autotuner works on newer ECUs, and it decides what you can and cannot do with a file you bought from us.
What Autotuner actually does on OBD
On older ECUs (EDC16, most EDC17 up to about 2013, MED17.5.5 on the 1.4 TSI) Autotuner reads the flash through the diagnostic port like any other tool. On anything with TPROT and an encrypted bootloader (EDC17C64, EDC17C74, MED17.5.21, MED17.5.25, MG1CS011, MD1CS006) it doesn’t read the memory at all. It identifies the software version and pulls the matching original from Autotuner’s server. That is a virtual read: a file that matches what the factory put in, not what is in the ECU now. If the car was tuned by the previous owner, the virtual read will not show it. Writing is real, though: the tool opens the ECU for programming over OBD and flashes the full calibration area.
The write step includes checksum correction, and that part is very good. You load a plain .bin, Autotuner checks the software ID against the ECU, corrects checksums and writes. There is no separate checksum module to buy.
Bench and boot with the same box
The bench/boot side covers TriCore (boot mode via the boot pad), bench mode on EDC17/MED17 with the GPT pin, Marelli, Delphi DCM3.5/DCM6.2 and a growing list of Continental SID and Denso units. A bench read is a true read: internal flash, EEPROM and external flash where fitted. That is what you want for an immo off or a clone, because the immo data lives in EEPROM and no virtual read contains it.
Subscription and licence
Autotuner is sold as a one-off tool with updates included for the first year, then a yearly update fee. If you let the subscription lapse the tool keeps working with the protocols it already has. Check current terms with your reseller, they change. Master and slave versions exist: a slave can only write files encrypted by its master, so if you are a slave user our .bin has to go through your master first.
Which ECUs is it typical for?
- VAG diesel: EDC17C46 (VW GOLF EDC17C46 03L997018D 9979 1037561782 DUMP), EDC17C64, EDC17C74, EDC17CP44 on the A4/A6 3.0 TDI
- VAG petrol: MED17.5.21, MED17.5.25, ME17.5.24 on the up!, MG1CS011 on the 1.5 TSI
- BMW: EDC17C41, EDC17C50, EDC17CP45, MEVD17.2.5, MD1CS001 (BMW 520D G30 MD1CS001 0281033065 10SW002443 O 8LWR0-000046DA-001 DUMP)
- PSA and Ford: EDC17C10, EDC17C60, EDC17C70, SID208, SID807EVO
- Renault, Dacia, Nissan: SID310, MD1CS006
Where it stops
No full OBD read on the encrypted generation, as above. Some EEPROM areas are not reachable via OBD even on the older ECUs, so mileage and immo jobs are bench work. Trucks and agricultural ECUs (EDC7UC31, EDC17CV41) are thin. Gearboxes: DQ200 and DQ250 are supported for read and write on most versions, but pairing after a mechatronic swap still needs ODIS or VCP. And Autotuner won’t recover a bricked ECU that another tool damaged unless the bootloader still answers, at which point bench recovery is the route (see our bricked ECU guide).
Writing a file from us with Autotuner
- Identify the ECU over OBD and save the virtual read or real read with the VIN in the name. Keep it, it’s your way back.
- Match the software number on the label to the file you order: AUDI A6 EDC17C64 04L997022A 3913 10SW013728 DUMP only fits a 04L997022A with 3913. A 3096 version needs its own file.
- Unzip the .bin we send. Do not rename the extension, do not open and re-save it in a hex editor.
- Choose Write, select the file, let Autotuner run its ID check. If it complains about a mismatch, stop and send us the label photo; a forced write is how ECUs get bricked.
- Let checksum correction run, write on a stabilised supply, then clear codes and do the adaptations (throttle, DPF, injector codes if it’s a diesel).
For an immo off on a bench-only ECU, send us the full bench read (flash plus EEPROM) rather than the virtual read; the virtual file has nothing to edit.
Original files for these platforms are in the original file category, sorted by ECU, for example EDC17C64 and MED17.5.21. If the version you need isn’t listed, send the label numbers and your read via the request form and we’ll match it.
