Volta 1.2 Immo Off: Marelli IAW 4AF / 59F ECU on Fiat Punto, Panda and Lancia Y
“Volta” is the Fiat workshop name for the Magneti Marelli IAW 4AF and IAW 59F engine controllers fitted to the 1.2 8v FIRE engine in the Fiat Punto (188), Panda (169), Seicento, Doblo and Lancia Y. The Code 2 immobilizer on these cars depends on the Body Computer, and when that unit fails or a used ECU is installed, the engine cranks without starting. A Volta immo off file solves it in one write.
Identify the ECU
The label shows IAW 4AF.xx or IAW 59F.xx with a Fiat part number (46 xxx xxx / 51 xxx xxx). The two-letter suffix (M3, S3, MB…) is the software family and must match the file. Later 1.2 engines moved to the IAW 5SF, which is a different unit with its own files.
Immo off, virgin or key programming?
- Keys lost, Body Computer OK — program new keys with the dealer procedure or a key tool (Fiat Examiner, Multiecuscan with the Code Card). No file change needed.
- Used ECU, own Body Computer OK — a virgin file lets the ECU learn the car’s code again.
- Body Computer dead, no Code Card, or engine swap — immo off is the practical route; the engine starts with any key.
Reading and writing
The IAW 4AF/59F is usually read on the bench. KTAG and Flex support the Marelli 4AF/59F in bench mode; KESS V2 can handle some 59F units over OBD. Older units carry a separate 24C04/95040 EEPROM next to the processor; the immobilizer data is there, and a chip programmer such as UPA-S can also be used.
- Read the full flash (and the EEPROM if your tool offers it) and save the original.
- Compare the part number and software suffix with the product page.
- Write the immo off file; verify; refit the ECU and start the engine.
After the write
The engine starts and runs normally. The Code warning lamp on the dashboard may remain on, because the Body Computer still expects a reply from the ECU. It does not affect driving or emissions. Diagnostics with Multiecuscan keep working.
Workshop notes
- A 4AF file on a 59F unit (or vice versa) will not start the engine — check the label, not only the car model.
- Keep the battery on a charger during the write; these ECUs are sensitive to voltage dips.
- If the car cranks but does not start after a correct immo off, check the crank sensor and the fuel pump relay in the Body Computer — common on 15-year-old Puntos.
Getting the right file
Search our immo off files for Fiat with “4AF” or “59F” and your part number. Not listed? Send the original read via the file request form — the immo off version is prepared from your own file.
