DPF Off Explained: How It Works, Which Fault Codes It Removes and What to Check First
The diesel particulate filter is the component that generates more workshop visits than any other emission part on a modern diesel. Blocked filters, failed regenerations, differential pressure sensor faults and the limp mode that follows are everyday problems. A DPF off file is one way to deal with them. This guide explains what the file actually does, what it does not do, and how to use it without damaging the ECU.
What the DPF does and why it fails
The DPF traps soot from the exhaust and burns it off during regeneration, when the ECU raises exhaust temperature by late injection. Regeneration needs a warm engine and a steady drive of 15 to 20 minutes. Cars used for short trips never complete it, soot builds up, the differential pressure rises and the ECU eventually locks the engine in limp mode. Ash from oil additives also accumulates and cannot be burned off, so every filter reaches the end of its life even on motorway cars.
What the DPF off file changes
The file disables the particulate filter strategy in the engine calibration: soot mass modelling, regeneration requests, differential pressure evaluation and the related diagnostic trouble codes. Everything else, fuel, boost, torque, EGR (unless you also order EGR off), stays stock. Typical codes that disappear are P2002 (efficiency below threshold), P2452/P2453 (pressure sensor), P242F (ash accumulation) and P244A/P244B (pressure too low/high). With the strategy off, the ECU no longer requests regenerations or enters limp mode for DPF reasons.
The physical side
A DPF off file is normally combined with physical removal of the filter core or replacement with a straight pipe. Leaving a blocked filter in place with the software off does not work: the exhaust is still restricted and the turbo suffers. The pressure sensor can stay connected; the file ignores it.
Legal position
In the EU, UK, USA and many other countries removing emission equipment from a road-registered vehicle is illegal and can fail the inspection. DPF off files on our site are supplied for off-road, competition, agricultural and testing use. Check the regulations that apply to you before ordering.
Matching the file to your ECU
DPF off is done on the calibration of a specific software version, so the hardware number and software number must match your ECU exactly. Common families we cover are EDC17CP14, EDC17C46, EDC17CP20, EDC16C34, SID807EVO and Denso diesel units. Read the numbers from the ECU label or from your tool’s identification screen and compare them with the product page. Our guide on reading ECU label numbers shows where to find them on Bosch, Continental and Denso units.
Writing the file
- Read and save the full original file first, with the tool you will use for writing.
- Check that the software number in your read matches the product you bought.
- Keep a charger on the battery, or a stable bench supply.
- Write the file over OBD if the unit allows it, otherwise on the bench. Tools such as KESS V2, KTAG and FLEX correct the checksum automatically.
- Clear the fault memory, run the engine to operating temperature and confirm that no DPF codes return.
When DPF off is not the answer
If the filter is simply full of soot on a car that is otherwise healthy, a forced regeneration with a diagnostic tool or a professional clean is the correct repair. DPF off makes sense when the filter is physically damaged, when the car is used off-road, or when the owner has decided on removal knowing the legal consequences. If the codes point to the pressure sensor or its hoses rather than the filter, fix the sensor first.
Need a file that is not listed?
Send your original read through the file request form with the vehicle details. We prepare DPF off solutions for most Bosch, Continental, Delphi, Denso and Marelli diesel ECUs.
