Isuzu Transtron ECU Immo Off and Original Files for D-Max, NPR and N/F Series Trucks

13 October 2026 4 min read

An Isuzu NPR 75 tipper has been sitting in the yard for a fortnight. The engine ECU, a Transtron unit under the passenger seat, took water through a split seal, and the used replacement from a breaker cranks without firing. The label on the new one reads 8980412646, the fault memory shows an immobiliser mismatch, and the local Isuzu dealer quotes three weeks. This is what Transtron immo off files are bought for.

What Transtron is

Transtron is a Japanese supplier (a Fujitsu and Isuzu joint venture) that builds the engine controllers for most Isuzu diesels: the D-Max pick-up with the 4JJ1 and 4JK1 engines, the NPR, NQR and NLR light trucks, the F-series mediums, and Isuzu-engined trucks sold under other badges in some markets. The ECU family doesn’t carry a Bosch-style name; Isuzu identifies it by a ten-digit part number starting 8980 or 8982 and a shorter eight-digit number starting 97 or 98, both printed on the label. Some older NPR units carry a Transtron M5.2.1 designation as well.

Numbers from the catalogue

  • ISUZU D-MAX TRANSTRON 8982241424 98224142 IMMO OFF
  • ISUZU D-MAX TRANSTRON 8982485291 98350183 IMMO OFF
  • ISUZU D-MAX TRANSTRON 8982485291 98350183 (stock)
  • ISUZU NPR TRANSTRON 8980412646 98081068 IMMO OFF
  • ISUZU NPR TRANSTRON M5.2.1 8975261961 97527001 (stock)
  • ISUZU F SERIES TRANSTRON 8980774127 98074887 IMMO OFF

Both numbers are needed. The 8980 number is the Isuzu part, the 98 number is the software or dataset, and two ECUs with the same part number can carry different 98 numbers after a dealer update. Watch for the Delphi units on some D-Max models (ISUZU D-MAX DELPHI 8980795280 BAAM 28129180980 is one); they use Isuzu part numbers too but are not Transtron and need a different file.

Reading a Transtron ECU

These are not the easiest units. OBD reading is supported on some D-Max and N-series versions with KESS3, FoxFlash and KT200 on their truck and Japanese protocol lists, and PCM Flash has Isuzu modules. On most NPR and F-series units the practical route is the bench, with the ECU on a harness and the tool in bench or boot mode; check your tool’s list for the exact 8980 number before removing the ECU. A full read includes flash and the EEPROM or internal area that holds the immobiliser data, and that full read is what we need for a precise immo off patch. The Isuzu dealer tool, IDSS, does diagnostics and key registration but does not read or write the calibration for you.

What went wrong on the bench

The three failures we see most on these:

  • Water. The NPR position under the seat and the D-Max position in the engine bay both let water in when seals age. Corroded pins on the main connector give intermittent starts that get blamed on the file. Clean and check the connector before writing anything.
  • Wrong power sequence in boot mode. Transtron units are sensitive to the order of ignition and boot signals on the bench; a bad sequence gives a half-read that looks valid. Compare file size and ID against a known good read.
  • Used ECU with a different 98 number. The engine starts with immo off but runs with wrong injector data or the wrong torque limits for the gearbox. Match the dataset, not just the part number.

Immo off or original

Isuzu’s immobiliser stores key data in the engine ECU on most versions and matches it against the transponder through the immobiliser control unit. A used ECU therefore needs key registration with IDSS and the security access that comes with it, which is the dealer route. An immo off file removes the check in the ECU so the truck starts on any key; for fleet trucks that is usually what’s wanted. When the original ECU is intact and the problem is a failed tune or a corrupted flash, the original file for the matching 98 number is the answer instead, and the immobiliser data is left alone.

Does immo off affect the tachograph or ABS?

No. The patch is inside the engine controller; other modules see the same messages as before.

Can you make a file from my read alone, without the label?

Yes, if the read is complete. The ID block carries the numbers. A partial read is where the trouble starts.

Send the two label numbers, the truck model and year, and the read if you have one through the request form. The prepared files are on the Transtron model page and the rest of the range on the Isuzu brand page.
