EDC17C42 Virgin File: Resetting a Used ECU on Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia Multijet
The Bosch EDC17C42 is the diesel ECU of the Fiat 500, Panda, Punto Evo, Doblo, Fiorino, Alfa Romeo MiTo and Giulietta and Lancia Delta with the 1.3, 1.6 and 2.0 Multijet engines (2010 onwards). Used units are everywhere, and the question is always the same: how to make a second-hand EDC17C42 accept the car. The answer is a virgin file.
What virgin means on this ECU
A virgin EDC17C42 has its immobilizer memory in the factory state. On the first ignition cycle it receives the code from the Body Computer and stores it permanently. From then on it is paired to that car exactly like the original unit. Anti-theft protection stays intact — this is the route Fiat dealers use when they fit a new ECU, only with our file instead of a new part.
When you need it
- Replacing a damaged EDC17C42 with a used one.
- A previous owner fitted an ECU from another car and the engine cranks without starting.
- Returning a car to standard after a botched immo off.
If the Body Computer itself is dead, a virgin file will not help — the ECU has nothing to learn from. That case needs an immo off file.
Reading the ECU
The EDC17C42 is a TriCore TC1767 unit. KESS V2 reads and writes it over OBD on most software versions; KTAG, Flex and New Trasdata handle it in bench or boot mode, which is also the recovery path if OBD access is lost. Save the original read: it holds the software number you must match (Fiat 5x xxx xxx and Bosch 1037 xxxxxx).
Step by step
- Connect a charger; read and save the original.
- Write the virgin file for the same hardware/software.
- Refit the ECU, switch the ignition on for 30 seconds without cranking.
- Switch off, wait 10 seconds, start the engine. Clear codes with Multiecuscan.
If it still does not start
- The Body Computer has a stored “ECU replaced too many times” counter on some models — a dealer tool reset may be needed.
- Injector codes (IMA) of the donor ECU differ from your injectors; re-enter them.
- The used ECU is a different engine variant (95 vs 105 hp): you need an original file for your variant as well.
Getting the right file
Browse EDC17C42 files in the virgin category and search your software number. If your version is missing, send the original read through the file request form and we prepare the virgin version.
