EDC17C54, C64 and C74 original files for VW Golf VII, Octavia III, Passat B8 and Crafter TDI

9 October 2026 4 min read

An Octavia III 1.6 TDI with 04L997021 and software 1646, a Passat B8 2.0 TDI with 04L906026Q and 2085, a Crafter with 03L997403R and 5830. All three arrive as “EDC17 VW diesel, need original”, and all three are different boxes: EDC17C64, EDC17C74 and EDC17C54. Order the wrong one and the best case is the tool rejecting the file; the worst case is a car that starts and runs badly because the SCR logic doesn’t match the hardware.

Sorting the three

  • EDC17C64: first-wave EA288 controller, 04L997021 and 04L997022 numbers. Golf VII 1.6 and 2.0 TDI, Octavia III, Leon 5F, A3 8V, and the A6 C7 2.0 TDI ultra.
  • EDC17C74: the later EA288 controller, 04L906026 numbers. Passat B8, Golf VII facelift, Tiguan II, Superb III, T6 2.0 TDI, and most 2015 to 2019 2.0 TDI applications. Some 1.6 TDI from 2015 as well.
  • EDC17C54: the odd one out. It sits on the Crafter 2E 2.0 TDI (2011 to 2016) with 03L997403 numbers, an EA189 relative in van form. Same processor family as the other two, different engine generation. It’s here because Crafter jobs land on the same bench, not because it’s EA288. Its own page is at EDC17C54.

Originals by number

  • SKODA OCTAVIA EDC17C64 04L997021 1646 10SW000811
  • VW ALL EDC17C64 04L997021D 3905 10SW013730
  • AUDI A6 EDC17C64 04L997021H 3912 10SW013729
  • AUDI A6 EDC17C64 04L997022A 3913 10SW013728
  • VW PASSAT EDC17C74 04L906026 3162 10SW009685
  • VW PASSAT EDC17C74 04L906026Q 2085 10SW006247

  • VW ALL EDC17C74 04L906026MT 3076 10SW008723
  • VW CRAFTER EDC17C54 03L997403 5814 1037536216
  • VW CRAFTER EDC17C54 03L997403S 0625 1037544701
  • VW CRAFTER EDC17C54 03L997403R 9978 1037561585

The four digits after the VAG number are the software version, and the 10SW or 1037 string is the Bosch ID. On the Crafter, 5814 and 5830 are pre-campaign and 9978 is post-campaign on most units. Match both when you order; a file with the right VAG number and the wrong version will write but leave the coding out of step.

AdBlue or not

EA288 came with and without SCR. Early Golf VII 1.6 and 2.0 TDI (CLHA, CRBC) had no AdBlue tank; the Passat B8, the A6 ultra and most cars from mid-2015 have SCR with a dosing module and NOx sensors. The ECU part number is different and so is the file. A non-SCR file in an SCR car throws dosing faults and starts the countdown; an SCR file in a non-SCR car reports missing sensors and drops power. We hold both, so tell us whether there’s a blue filler cap next to the diesel one.

Immo 5 and the virgin file

MQB cars use Immo 5. The ECU is matched to the cluster and the key data lives in both, with the pairing done online through ODIS. A second-hand C64 or C74 fitted as-is will crank and not start. Options: a virgin file (immo data cleared) so the ECU can be adapted with ODIS or VCP, or an immo off file so it runs without the handshake. Virgin is the proper route when you or a partner can do the adaptation; immo off is the fallback when nobody local has online access. Either way, send us the read from the replacement ECU, not the old one. The original vs virgin vs FRF post explains the difference in more detail.

Bench or OBD

Older C64 software (2013 to 2015) reads over OBD with KESS3, Autotuner and Flex. After the emissions update campaigns, and on nearly every C74, OBD is locked for tuning tools and the ECU comes out for a bench read with Flex, KT200, FoxFlash or New Trasdata. It’s a plate-and-cable job on the TC179x, no opening needed, ten minutes each way. Boot mode only if the bench read fails. C54 on the Crafter still reads over OBD on most versions.

One more thing from the bench: a C74 that reads fine but won’t accept a write is usually a battery-voltage problem, not a locked ECU. These units are fussy below 12.5 V. Put a proper support unit on the car, not a trickle charger.

Stock reads for the EA288 units are on the EDC17C64 and EDC17C74 pages, sorted by software number, and the virgin category holds the cleared versions for ECU swaps. If your number isn’t up, send the bench read through the request page and we’ll pull the match.
