Immo Off or Key Programming? How to Decide When the Car Won’t Recognise the Key
The immobilizer lamp flashes, the engine cranks or stops after a second — and the first question is always the same: immo off or key programming? They solve different problems. Key programming fixes the key side; immo off removes the check on the engine ECU side. Choosing wrong costs money and sometimes a car that starts but is no longer insurable.
Start from the cause
- All keys lost — key programming (dealer or locksmith with the PIN / EEPROM read of the immobilizer box). No ECU file needed as long as the body computer and ECU are original.
- One key stopped working — the transponder chip is dead or the key was never coded. Key programming again.
- Body computer / immobilizer box faulty — replacement plus pairing, or immo off on the engine ECU if the box is obsolete or too expensive (typical on 15–25-year-old Fiat, Renault, Opel, Peugeot).
- Used engine ECU fitted — virgin file plus pairing, or immo off. Key programming does nothing here; the ECU, not the key, is the stranger.
- Engine swap / different chassis — immo off, because there is no matching body computer at all.
What immo off changes
The engine ECU stops asking the immobilizer box for a code. Everything else — injection, emissions, diagnostics — stays as it was. On most cars the dashboard immo lamp keeps flashing because the box still waits for an answer; on some brands the lamp goes out. The car can be started with any mechanically fitting key, so a hidden cut-off switch is a sensible addition for a road car.
What key programming changes
A new transponder is stored in the immobilizer box (cluster, BSI, UCH, EWS/CAS, PATS). The engine ECU is untouched. The anti-theft function stays intact. Requires the PIN/SKC or a tool that reads it from the box, and physically present keys.
Brand examples
- VAG Immo 3: lost SKC and a dead cluster → immo off on ME7.5 / EDC15 / EDC16 is common; with a working cluster, key programming with VCDS.
- Ford PATS: two working keys let you add a third from the driver’s seat; no keys → programming with IDS/FORScan; used SID/EDC ECU → virgin file.
- PSA: BSI faults are frequent; immo off on EDC15C2 / EDC16C34 / SID803 saves an obsolete BSI.
- Renault: UCH failures → immo off on Sirius 32 / EDC15C3 / SID301; keys with a working UCH → CLIP.
- Fiat Code 2: no Code Card and dead Body Computer → immo off (IAW 4AF/59F, EDC15C7, MJD 6F3).
- BMW EWS: ISN alignment between DME and EWS; a used DME needs the ISN written, which is closer to a virgin file than to immo off.
Legal and insurance note
Immo off is legal to perform on your own vehicle in most countries, but some insurers require a working factory immobilizer for theft cover. For a daily road car, prefer key programming or a virgin file when it is possible; keep immo off for cars where the immobilizer hardware is beyond repair.
Files
Our immo off and virgin files are sorted by ECU model and software number. Not sure which you need? Describe the symptom in the file request form and attach the ECU label photo.
