MAF Off on EDC15, EDC16 and EDC17 Diesels: P0100 to P0103, MAP-Only Running and EGR

24 October 2026 4 min read

A 2004 Ibiza 1.9 TDI comes in with no turbo, black smoke on full throttle and P0101 stored. VCDS group 003 shows specified air mass 850 mg/stroke and actual 480. The Bosch HFM on the intake is the third one in two years; the previous two were cheap copies. The owner asks whether the ECU can just run without it.

What the MAF does on a diesel

On Bosch EDC15, EDC16 and EDC17 the air mass signal has two jobs. It is the feedback for EGR control: the ECU commands an EGR rate, watches the air mass drop as exhaust replaces fresh air, and closes the loop on it. And it feeds the smoke limiter: injection quantity at full load is capped by the air mass so the engine doesn’t over-fuel. Boost control uses the MAP sensor, not the MAF, on all three generations. That’s why a failing MAF gives low power (the smoke limiter clamps fuel) and smoke (wrong EGR rate, or the limiter is fooled the other way when the sensor reads high).

Codes

  • P0100: MAF circuit malfunction, usually wiring or a dead sensor.
  • P0101: range/performance, the classic drifted or contaminated sensor, also a split intake hose after the sensor.
  • P0102 and P0103: signal low or high, typically a short or an open in the harness.
  • P0401 next to P0101 usually means the MAF is the root cause and the EGR is innocent.

Before you delete it

A genuine Bosch HFM (check the part number on the sensor body against the label; on VAG PD engines it usually carries a 038906461 number with a letter suffix) fixes nearly every P0101 and most low-power complaints. Copies drift within months, so if the history is ‘replaced twice already’ ask what brand. Check the intake for splits and the air filter box for a broken sealing lip. Then decide.

What MAF off changes in the file

The file switches the air mass source from the sensor to the modelled value: the ECU calculates air mass from MAP, intake temperature, rpm and volumetric efficiency tables. On EDC17 that model is already there and well calibrated, because the ECU uses it as a plausibility reference. On EDC16 it exists but is cruder. On EDC15 it’s little more than a lookup table by rpm and boost. The MAF diagnostics (P0100 to P0103) are disabled, and the sensor can be unplugged or left in.

Because the EGR loop loses its feedback, MAF off almost always comes with EGR off in the same file. With the MAF gone and EGR still active the ECU either runs EGR open-loop (dirty, smoky) or trips P0401 on every drive. On our examples the two go together: SEAT IBIZA EDC15P+ 0281011244 038906019BG 5180 1037368177 EGR OFF DUMP, VW POLO EDC15P+ 0281011241 045906019BF 5179 1037368175 EGR OFF DUMP, VW TRANSPORTER EDC16U1 0281010735 038906016A 5226 1037368204 EGR OFF STAGE1 TUNED, JETTA EDC16U31 0281012553 038906016AG 7000 1037374757 EGR OFF STAGE1 TUNED, OPEL VECTRA C EDC16C9 0281012534 1037A50284 EGR OFF DUMP and AUDI A6 EDC15VM 0281011387 8E0907401J 0006 1037368568 EGR OFF STAGE1 TUNED.

When it’s a bad idea

  • Any diesel with a DPF. The soot model and the regen exhaust mass flow calculation use the measured air mass. Run a DPF car on modelled air and the regen timing drifts; on EDC17C46 and EDC16U34 with DPF it ends in a blocked filter.
  • Euro 5 and Euro 6 cars with SCR or a NOx sensor, for the same reason.
  • Engines where the VNT correction on overrun uses the MAF (some EDC16C39 Fiat and Opel software).
  • Petrol engines. Never; the fuel model is built on it.

Where it’s reasonable: pre-DPF PD and VE engines on EDC15 and EDC16, the 1.9 and 2.0 TDI, Vectra 1.9 CDTI without DPF, older Mercedes CDI on EDC15C6 and EDC16C2, plus Marelli MJD Fiat 1.3 MJT, which mostly has no MAF from the factory and shows how a MAP-only diesel is meant to run.

Checking the result

After the flash, drive it and log groups 003 and 011 (boost specified/actual). Full-load smoke should be light grey to none; heavy black smoke means the smoke limiter tables need adjusting for the modelled air, which is a calibration job, not a DTC job. Legally, a MAF isn’t an emission component in itself, but EGR off is, so the combined file carries the same inspection caveat as any EGR delete in the EU.

Send the full read, the stored codes and a note on whether the car has a DPF via the request form. Combined solutions live in the EGR off category, and the model pages EDC15P and EDC16U1 list the reads above.
