Ford BCM Dump on Transit Mk8, Focus Mk3 and Kuga: PATS Keys and Module Replacement
Transit Mk8 2.2 TDCi, 2015. No crank, PATS light flashing, three fresh keys from a locksmith that the van won’t accept. The previous garage replaced the BCM with a used one because the old one had water in it, and the label on the new box reads BK2T-14B476-BU. That’s the Body Control Module, and on this generation it is also the immobiliser, which is why the keys are useless.
Where PATS lives on a Ford
It moved over the years, and knowing which generation you have decides the job:
- Focus Mk1, Mondeo Mk3, Transit Mk6: PATS in the instrument cluster, engine ECU linked to it.
- Transit Mk7, Focus Mk2, Fiesta Mk6: the GEM handles body functions, PATS still in the cluster on most versions.
- Focus Mk3, Kuga Mk2, Transit Mk8, Transit Connect Mk2, Fiesta Mk7: the BCM holds the PATS keys, the engine ECU is paired to it, the cluster is a passenger.
On the BCM generation a used module brings its own key list, its own VIN and its own configuration (the As-Built data). Fit it bare and you get exactly the Transit above.
What is in the BCM dump
The EEPROM (or the internal flash on later units) stores the As-Built configuration, the VIN, the PATS key IDs and the secret used to pair the PCM, plus odometer data on most versions. So a dump can move a van’s identity into a donor BCM, and it can also turn a locked donor back into a virgin unit ready for PMI.
Two ways to replace a BCM
Way 1: clone the original
- Read the old BCM, water damage or not. Corrosion usually kills the drivers, not the memory.
- Get a donor with the same 14B476 number and suffix. BK2T-14B476-BU won’t take the As-Built of a different suffix cleanly.
- Write the old dump, fit, test the keys and everything the BCM drives (lights, wipers, locking, wiper park).
Way 2: virgin BCM and PMI
- Use a virgin dump (or a new module) and run Programmable Module Installation in IDS or FDRS. This writes the VIN and pulls the As-Built from the Ford server.
- Run the PATS parameter reset so the new BCM and the existing PCM agree, then program two keys.
- FORScan with the extended licence handles key programming and some PATS functions on this generation, but PMI on a fresh BCM is dealer-tool territory on most versions.
Symptoms that mean BCM, not something else
- PATS light flashing fast with keys that used to work (after water, or a jump-start gone wrong).
- Random functions dropping out: no interior light, no rear wiper, locks cycling.
- Several modules reporting U-codes (lost communication with BCM) at the same time.
- Battery draining because the BCM never sleeps.
Before you order anything, check the earth strap at the bulkhead and the BCM connector for green pins. Water in the passenger footwell on the Mk8 Transit is a known problem; the BCM sits low on the A-pillar and takes the hit.
Can I use the engine ECU dump to get the keys back?
No. The PCM holds only the pairing secret, not the key IDs. You need the BCM data. If both units are dead you’ll be doing PMI on both and programming new keys.
Does a BCM clone carry the mileage?
On the Mk8 Transit and Focus Mk3 the odometer is stored in more than one module and the cluster wins on most versions. A cloned BCM keeps the value consistent; a virgin BCM picks it up from the cluster after PMI. Either way the customer sees the right number.
The Transit BCM BK2T-14B476-BU and other Ford body and engine dumps are on the Ford brand page, with the immo-related ones in the immobilizer category. If you need a virgin version for PMI rather than a clone, say so in the request form along with a photo of the 14B476 label.
