ME17.5.24 and ME17.5.63 original files: VW Up, Skoda Citigo 1.0 MPI and Jetta 2.5 MPI

A VW Up 1.0 MPI arrives on a trailer: no start, no communication with the engine module, 04C906020EN on the label. Tiny engine, tiny ECU, and the same Bosch ME17.5.24 as the Skoda Citigo and Seat Mii. Next to it a Jetta with the 2.5 five-cylinder, 07K906055L on the sticker, imported from the US and fitted with a used ECU that won’t adapt. That one is ME17.5.63. Both are port-injection ME17.5 units, and both come up far more often than their engine sizes suggest.

ME17.5.24: Up, Citigo, Mii

The 1.0 MPI three-cylinder (CHYA, CHYB, CPGA) in the Up trio from 2011 to about 2019 runs ME17.5.24 with 04C906020 numbers. It’s a small Tricore unit with a modest flash. The engine makes 60 or 75 hp and there isn’t meaningful tuning to sell; the requests are originals after a failed update, immo problems after a cluster swap, and recovery after water got into the plenum and then the ECU. The natural-gas Eco Up uses a different variant, so check the label.

Two software versions under the same 04C906020CT, 0619 and 2505, is normal for this unit. Read the version before you order.

ME17.5.63: the 2.5 MPI five-cylinder

In our catalogue the 07K906055 series is the 2.5-litre inline-five (CBTA, CBUA) used in the Jetta, Golf, Beetle and Passat NMS built for North America from about 2012. They reach Europe and Turkey as grey imports and in Middle East fleets. The ECU is ME17.5.63:

The Polo 1.4 and 1.6 MPI (CGGB, CFNA) that people expect under this name sit on ME17.5.26 on most versions, a close relative with its own part numbers. Same tools, same procedure, different file. Check the label before ordering; if it says ME17.5.26, order from the ME17.5.26 page instead.

What went wrong on the bench

An Up came in after a workshop had tried an OBD write with a file for a different 04C906020 suffix. The tool accepted it, the ECU went silent, and the car sat for three weeks. On the bench the ECU still answered in boot mode, we matched the correct 04C906020EN version from the partial read, and it came back. A wrong-suffix file might not kill a bigger ECU with a full write, but the small ME17 units have less margin for a failed block.

On the 2.5, the failure is usually the used ECU that “doesn’t need adapting” because it’s the same part number. It does. These cars are Immo 4, and the dealer route in Europe is awkward for a US-market VIN. Immo off in the ECU EEPROM is the practical answer, and it’s what most of the 07K906055 requests turn out to be.

Reading and writing

  1. OBD first. KESS3, Autotuner and Flex read the flash on most ME17.5.24 and ME17.5.63 software. Battery support is not optional on the Up; the small battery sags fast and a sag mid-write is how the trailer job above started.
  2. Immo off or a virgin file needs the EEPROM, so it’s a bench read: Flex, KT200, FoxFlash or New Trasdata with the ME17 plate.
  3. Failed OBD write: don’t retry. Bench read, then boot mode if the bench read returns nothing. Write the full original with the matching software version.
  4. After the write, clear codes and drive it. The Up throttle body needs a basic setting on some versions; do it with VCDS before handing the car back.

The ME17.5.24 and ME17.5.63 pages list originals by suffix and version. Send the read and a label photo through the request form and say which car and market it is; on the 2.5 the market matters for the coding. Immo off versions are in the immo off category.
