EDC17C70 on Ford Focus, Transit Courier and Connect 1.5/1.6 TDCi: Original and PATS Files

12 October 2026 4 min read

A Transit Courier 1.5 TDCi, 2017, cranks and dies after a second-hand engine ECU was fitted following water damage. FORScan shows the new module identifying as JT71-14C204-HR, the PATS status reads not learned, and the parameter reset stops with a security access error because the donor ECU still holds the previous van’s data. The ECU is a Bosch EDC17C70, and this is the most common reason a C70 lands on our desk.

Where the EDC17C70 is used

Ford fitted the EDC17C70 to the 1.5 and 1.6 TDCi Duratorq engines from about 2014: Focus III (including the facelift), Fiesta, B-Max, C-Max, Transit Courier, Transit Connect and Tourneo Connect. The 1.5 in the Courier and the 1.5 in the Focus share the engine but not the calibration; the Courier carries JT71 numbers, the Connect FV61, the Focus F1F1. The earlier 1.6 TDCi on the Fiesta and Courier used the EDC17C10 with ET71 and BV21 numbers, so if you see one of those it’s a different ECU.

Reading the Ford label

Ford numbers on the C70 come as a 14C204 software reference (the calibration) plus a Bosch part number starting 0281 and one or two Bosch software IDs starting 10SW or 1037. All of them appear in our product titles:

  • FORD FOCUS EDC17C70 0281032905 F1F1-14C204-LF 10SW058122 1037556373
  • FORD FOCUS EDC17C70 0281032644 F1F1-14C204-LH 1037556084 10SW058122
  • FORD COURIER EDC17C70 0281035141 JT71-14C204-PC 10SW029024 10SW060205
  • FORD COURIER EDC17C70 0281035947 JT71-14C204-HR 10SW036496 10SW071066
  • FORD COURIER EDC17C70 0281036925 JT71-14C204-AFA 10SW056166
  • FORD CONNECT EDC17C70 0281034361 FV61-14C204-BSA 10SW015452

Two Focus entries share 10SW058122 but differ in the 14C204 suffix (LF versus LH) and the Bosch number. Ford updated calibrations often on these engines, mostly for DPF and injector strategies, and the suffix is the update level. A 12A650 hardware number is printed too; it’s less useful for file matching on the C70 than the 14C204.

PATS on the EDC17C70

Can a used C70 be paired with FORScan?

Often yes, if the donor was the same model and the ECU accepts the parameter reset. FORScan or IDS run the PCM parameter reset and then the key relearn with two keys. When the donor ECU refuses (different model, locked, or the cluster is also used), a virgin file puts it back to the unpaired state so the reset works as on a new part.

When is immo off the better call?

When the instrument cluster or BCM is the faulty side, or the customer has no keys and no time for the dealer route. An immo off file for the matching software lets the engine run without the PATS handshake. The dash may still log a PATS code; it doesn’t stop the engine.

Does immo off need a bench read?

Yes. OBD reads with KESS V2 or KESS3 get the flash, but the immobiliser data is in the area you only see on the bench. KTAG, Flex and New Trasdata read the C70 fully on the bench; boot mode is rarely needed.

DPF and the 1.5 TDCi

The 1.5 TDCi in urban use is a regeneration-interrupted engine. Oil level rises from fuel dilution, the DPF light comes on at 30,000 km, and the workshop gets asked to make it go away. A stock original file is what you want when a previous tune or a bad delete has confused the strategy, and it’s also the first step before any diagnosis on a car with an unknown history. DPF removal is an emission change; in the EU it fails the periodic inspection and in Turkey the TUVTURK check. We supply DPF off for the C70 on that understanding, matched to the exact 14C204.

Replacement ECU, in order

  1. Read the donor ECU on the bench and keep the file.
  2. Compare its 14C204 with the original. Same engine and gearbox type (manual or PowerShift) matters; the calibration includes gearbox-related data.
  3. Write the virgin or immo off file for the donor’s own software number, not the original van’s, unless you also want to change the calibration.
  4. Fit, run the FORScan parameter reset (virgin route) or simply start (immo off route), then code the injectors.

For the right file, send the full label plus a FORScan module identification screenshot through the request page. What’s already prepared is on the EDC17C70 model page, and other Ford controllers such as the SID208 are listed on the Ford brand page.
