Renault UCH Dump for Clio II/III, Megane II, Symbol and Kangoo: Keys, PIN and Replacement
A Renault Symbol from 2010, 1.5 dCi. The customer lost the only key, a locksmith cut a blade and programmed a transponder with CLIP, and it still won’t start. The immo light flashes, the ring in the ignition sees the chip, but the UCH refuses it. On the label of the box behind the fuse panel: 8201068830, U180126003-D. That’s the UCH, Renault’s body computer, and on these cars it is the immobiliser master.
Where the keys really live on a Renault
From the Clio II onwards Renault moved key data out of the engine ECU and into the UCH. The engine ECU only holds a coded link to the UCH. That means:
- Transponder IDs (up to four keys on most versions) are stored in the UCH EEPROM.
- The security code (the 12-character code the dealer asks for) is derived from data in the same dump.
- The engine ECU is paired to the UCH with that code, and a virgin engine ECU pairs itself at first start.
Swap the UCH without carrying the data across and you have a car that sees the key but never sends the release to the engine ECU. Swap the engine ECU alone and the old UCH will pair the new one as long as the ECU is virgin; that side is covered in our immo off guide.
Which cars use which UCH?
Clio II, Symbol/Thalia and Kangoo I use the keyed UCH. Clio III (from 2005) and Kangoo II use a keyed UCH or the card system depending on trim. Megane II and Scenic II use the hands-free card and a different UCH family that also stores the card data. Symbol II (2008 onwards, the Turkish-built car) sits close to Clio III hardware, which is why its 8201068830 unit is one of the most requested dumps we have.
Can I read the PIN from the dump?
On most keyed UCH versions, yes. Zed-Full, AVDI and Tango calculate the code from the EEPROM dump, and CLIP then accepts it for key programming. On card-system cars the calculation needs both the UCH dump and, sometimes, the engine ECU, so check what your tool supports before quoting the job.
Can I fit a used UCH?
Yes, with conditions. The donor must carry the same part number and the same hardware revision (the U-number after the Renault number). Write the original dump into it and you keep the keys, the mileage, the VIN and the options. Fit it bare and you get the donor’s keys, which you don’t have, and CLIP will ask for a code you don’t know.
What went wrong on the bench (three real cases)
Case 1. A Clio II UCH read fine, written into a donor, car started. Then the customer came back: no rear wiper, no rear demist. The donor was a lower-spec unit with fewer populated drivers. Compare the option list on the label before buying.
Case 2. A Kangoo UCH read with the wrong EEPROM type selected in UPA. The dump looked plausible, but the checksum was wrong and the pairing failed. Verify the read twice and look for the VIN in ASCII.
Case 3. A Megane II with a card fault. Someone bought a used UCH and a used card ‘from the same car’. The card was fine, the UCH wasn’t from that car. Card-system UCH units store the card serials, so the set has to match.
Procedure for a UCH replacement with a dump
- Photograph the label and read the EEPROM (UPA, XProg, Orange5, or in-circuit if the unit still talks).
- Get the dump for the same number if the original is corrupted. Our Symbol listing is the 8201068830 U180126003-D unit.
- Write it into the donor, verify, fit.
- Connect CLIP. Read the VIN from the UCH, check the option configuration, clear the immobiliser faults.
- Test every key, the central locking, the wipers and the lights. On Symbol and Clio III also check the trip computer.
One thing to be clear about: a dump from us starts the car with the keys stored inside it, not with yours. If you use our dump rather than the original one you still program the customer’s keys with CLIP and the security code, which the same dump lets you calculate.
You’ll find the Symbol UCH, the Sagem S3000, Sirius 32 and EMS3132 engine ECUs and the rest of the range on the Renault brand page and in the immobilizer category. For an unlisted UCH number, send a label photo and the ‘U’ revision code through the request form and we’ll check the shelf.
