Vmax Speed Limiter Removal on Transporter, Sprinter, Ducato and Crafter Fleet Vans

23 October 2026 4 min read

A courier company hands you the keys to three Sprinter 316 CDI vans, all limited to 90 km/h from the factory, and asks for 130 so the drivers stop being overtaken by trucks. Or a used Transporter T5 from a utility fleet that won’t go past 100 and has no sticker to say why. Or a 2010 A6 3.0 TDI whose owner wants the 250 km/h cap gone. Three different limiters, three different answers.

Where the limit sits

  • Engine ECU calibration: the normal case. Bosch EDC16 and EDC17 hold a vehicle speed limit map (often one value per gear plus a global cap, sometimes with hysteresis), Delphi DCM and Siemens SID hold a single cap. This is what a Vmax file changes. Examples from our reads: VW JETTA EDC16U31 0281012553 038906016AG 7000 1037374757 TUNED VMAX OK and AUDI A6 EDC16CP34 4F9997401C 0001 10SW087675 DPF EGR TUNED VMAX.
  • Coding: many fleet limiters on Sprinter (OM646/OM651 with CRD2, CRD3 or MD1) and Transporter T5/T6 are a coded parameter, set at the factory to the fleet order. On T5 and T6 VCDS can change it through an engine ECU adaptation channel with the right login; on Sprinter it’s a Xentry variant coding option. No file needed, and it’s the first thing to try.
  • Gearbox TCU: on automatics the transmission has its own vehicle speed ceiling. On a DSG DQ250 or a 7G-Tronic the TCU can hold the car at the same 250 even after the engine file is changed. Removing the engine limit without touching the TCU results in a wall at the same speed. ZF 8HP in BMW needs the EGS software done together with the DME.
  • Body module: rare, but some Ducato and Boxer fleet variants have a limiter function in the body computer, and older Fiat vans on EDC16C39 and EDC17C49 may have both a coded and a calibrated limit.

Van by van

Mercedes Sprinter W906: factory 90, 100 or 120 km/h depending on the order. Reads we hold for the OM651 era go through CRD2 and, on the 2018 W907 and Vito W447, MD1CP001 such as MERCEDES VITO MD1CP001 0281034753 6549037304 10SW027171. Try Xentry coding first; if the option is locked, the file does it.

VW Transporter and Crafter: VW CRAFTER EDC17C54 03L997403 9978 1037561045 and VW CRAFTER EDC16CP34 0281014132 074906032BA 5176 1037503935 are both common. T5 1.9 TDI on EDC16U1 (VW TRANSPORTER EDC16U1 0281011568 070906016AJ 7002 1037372363) has the limit in the calibration; a 2.5 TDI on EDC16CP34 the same. T6 on EDC17C74 is mostly coded.

Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer, Citroen Jumper: PSA versions on DCM7.1B and DCM6.2C (PEUGEOT BOXER DCM7.1B 9824601180 9696660880, CITROEN JUMPER DCM6.2C 9809447780 9693294280) hold a single vehicle speed cap. Ducato 2.3 MJT on Bosch EDC16C39 and EDC17C49 is similar. Fleet limits of 90, 100 or 130 are all just a value.

Ford Transit Custom 2.2 TDCi on SID208 (FORD CUSTOM SID208 BK21-12A650-AC BK21-14C204-BPK): a single cap; some fleet units also have a limiter enabled by the body module that FORScan can see.

VAG 250 km/h: EDC16CP34, EDC17CP44 and MED17 cars. The cap is a calibration value; on quattro automatics the TCU limit also needs raising or the car stops at 250 regardless.

Before you raise it: tyres and brakes

Van tyres are commonly rated Q (160 km/h) or R (170 km/h) at full load, some cargo tyres lower. A Sprinter set to 160 on tyres rated for 150 at its axle load is a blowout waiting to happen. Read the load and speed index on the sidewall, check the registration document for the approved maximum speed, and don’t set the limiter above the lower of the two. Set a new sensible value (we usually put 140 to 160 on vans) rather than removing the limit entirely.

Vehicles over 3.5 t (N2, N3) must by EU rules have a limiter at 90 km/h (buses 100). Removing it on those is illegal everywhere and roadside checks read the tachograph. On N1 vans under 3.5 t and on passenger cars there is no mandatory limiter, and a fleet limit is a private choice, so removing or raising it is legal as long as the tyres and the registration document allow the new speed. New cars from 2024 have ISA (intelligent speed assistance), a separate advisory system that isn’t affected by the Vmax file.

For a Vmax file send the full read, the current limit and the value you want, plus the tyre speed rating so we can push back if it’s unsafe. Use the request form; ECU pages worth checking first are EDC17C54, DCM7.1B and SID208.
