Start-Stop Disable via ECU File, Coding or Emulator on Golf, Passat, BMW F20 and Peugeot 308
A Passat B8 2.0 TDI arrives with a new battery, the second in three years. The owner drives in city traffic and the engine restarts forty times a day. The AGM battery went early, the starter is on its second brush set, and now the customer wants the start-stop gone for good, not just the button he has to press every morning.
Three ways to kill it, and the difference between them
Coding with a diagnostic tool
On many VAG cars from 2010 to about 2017 the cheapest fix is an adaptation channel in the engine ECU with VCDS or ODIS: the start-stop voltage threshold. Set it so the ECU believes the battery is always too low to allow a stop, and the function never engages. On BMW F-series the start-stop memory can be coded in the FEM/BDC with E-Sys so the last button state is kept after ignition off. Ford lets FORScan change a few start-stop parameters on some Focus and Kuga. Coding leaves no trace in the calibration and survives a dealer engine-software update on some cars, but not all; a BDC update often resets it.
Emulator or memory module
A small box behind the button that presses it for you a second after ignition on. No ECU work, easy to remove, but the cluster still shows the deactivation icon, and on cars where the button is on a LIN bus it can throw a plausibility fault.
ECU file
In the engine calibration the function has a global enable and a set of release conditions (coolant temperature, battery state from the BEM, cabin temperature request, steering angle, gradient, speed history). A correct file sets the enable off and the release conditions permanently unmet, so the ECU behaves as if a condition is never satisfied. The cluster shows nothing, no code is logged, the button does nothing. It’s the only method that leaves no message and no wear on the starter.
What the file must and must not change
- Must: the start-stop enable and release conditions in the engine ECU (EDC17, MED17, MD1, SID).
- Must not: the battery energy management, the alternator charging strategy or the battery sensor evaluation. A crude file that also disables the battery monitor gives a flat AGM in winter.
- On cars with a starter-generator (PSA e-HDi with the Valeo reversible alternator, Mercedes 48 V mild hybrids), the stop function is shared between the engine ECU and the belt starter controller. A file alone doesn’t fully disable it; leave those to coding.
Battery wear, and which cars keep the setting
Start-stop needs an AGM or EFB battery and registers it in the gateway (VAG: BEM code via VCDS; BMW: battery registration with ISTA or a good scanner). Fit a standard flooded battery and the ECU still tries to run start-stop with a charging curve the battery can’t take; that’s how a battery dies in eighteen months. Disabling start-stop doesn’t remove the need to code a replacement battery correctly.
Cars that keep a manual ‘off’ after ignition off: very few from the factory. Most VAG, BMW, PSA and Ford cars reset the button every cycle, which is what drives the whole aftermarket for this.

Side effects and the legal side
Expect slightly higher fuel use in traffic (the type-approval CO2 figure assumes the function works, which is why it exists). On some VAG cars the start-stop icon in the cluster still shows a crossed-out symbol on the first drive after the flash until the gateway learns the new state; it clears. Legally, start-stop counts as a CO2-relevant system in the EU type approval, but there is no inspection test for it and no state we know of checks it. It’s your customer’s call; tell them what the fuel penalty is.
To get the file, send the full read, the VIN and whether the car has a reversible alternator or a 48 V system via the request form. Model pages with existing reads: EDC17C74, MED17.5.5, EDC17C50.
