Toyota Denso ECU Files: Reading, Recovery, Immo Off and DPF Off on Denso Units
Toyota and Lexus use Denso engine control units almost exclusively, and they behave differently from the Bosch and Continental ECUs most workshops know. Part numbers follow Toyota’s own scheme, the processors are Renesas, and the immobilizer is tightly linked to the smart key or the transponder ECU. This guide explains how to identify a Denso unit, how to read it and which Denso files we supply.
Identifying the unit
The label carries a Toyota part number (89661-xxxxx for engine ECUs, 89663-xxxxx for later units, 89666-xxxxx on some hybrids) and a Denso number (for example 275036-xxxx or MB275800-xxxx). Our product titles use the Toyota number followed by the type, for example “TOYOTA ALL DENSO 89665-0C841 DUMP”. Compare both numbers with the label. Denso units are not interchangeable across software revisions even when the engine is the same.
Processor generations
- Denso with Renesas SH7055/SH7058 (2005 to ~2012): Hilux, Land Cruiser, RAV4, Avensis diesels and petrols. Read in bench or boot mode; some units respond over OBD with a Denso protocol.
- Denso with Renesas SH72531/SH72543 (2012 onwards): 1.4 D-4D, 2.0/2.2 D-4D, 2.8 GD engines. Bench and boot mode with PCM Flash, FLEX or KTAG.
- Denso with 76F00xx (NEC/Renesas V850): petrol ECUs on Corolla, Yaris, Auris. Mostly bench reading.
Common jobs on Denso ECUs
Original file recovery
Interrupted flashes leave the SH7058/SH72543 without a valid program. Writing the full original dump in boot mode restores it. Our Toyota originals are complete reads including the EEPROM area.
Immo off
Toyota immobilizer data is stored in the ECU and paired with the transponder ECU or the certification ECU on smart-key cars. A used engine ECU will not start the car. The immo off file removes the check so the engine runs regardless of the key system, which is the standard solution for engine swaps, exports and failed immobilizer ECUs. If you want to keep the key system, a virgin file followed by ECU registration with Techstream is the alternative.
DPF and EGR off
1.4, 2.0, 2.2 D-4D and 2.8 GD engines are known for DPF and EGR trouble. DPF off and EGR off files for Denso are made on the original calibration of the exact software version and are supplied for off-road use.
Reading procedure
- Identify the processor from the tool’s ECU list or by opening the case.
- Connect in bench mode with the correct Denso pinout; use boot mode if the tool requires it for that processor.
- Read the full flash and, where present, the EEPROM. Save both.
- Verify the read: the tool should identify the software number that matches the label.
