The 2026 ECU File Report: Inside 36,835 Aftermarket ECU Files

28 October 2026 3 min read

We analysed our full catalogue of 36,835 ECU files supplied to workshops, tuners and auto-electricians worldwide, and grouped them by brand, ECU family, file type, vehicle and the tools used to read them. The result is a snapshot of what the car-repair aftermarket actually works on in 2026. All figures are counts from the AutoECUFile catalogue as of October 2026, and you are free to cite them with a link to this page.

1. Volkswagen Group dominates the aftermarket

The VW Group (Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat) accounts for by far the largest share of ECU work. Volkswagen alone has 4,718 files, more than Fiat, Toyota and Ford combined.

Rank Brand ECU files
1 Volkswagen 4,718
2 Audi 1,606
3 Fiat 972
4 Toyota 896
5 Peugeot 779
6 BMW 762
7 Ford 686
8 Mercedes-Benz 664
9 Hyundai 578
10 Opel 527

The diesel-heavy VAG platforms (the TDI engines and the MQB range) generate the most ECU-file demand in the independent aftermarket.

2. The single most common ECU: Bosch EDC17CP14

One ECU family stands out. The Bosch EDC17CP14, with 1,150 files, is the most common engine ECU in the catalogue. Bosch’s EDC17 diesel family and MED17 petrol family dominate overall; Denso, driven by Toyota, is the leading non-Bosch unit.

Rank ECU family Files
1 Bosch EDC17CP14 1,150
2 Denso 1,089
3 Bosch EDC17C46 712
4 Bosch EDC17CP20 476
5 Bosch EDC16C39 365
6 Bosch MED17.5.5 363
7 Bosch EDC17C64 360
8 Bosch EDC16C34 309
9 Bosch EDC17C54 293
10 Bosch EDC17CP44 258

You can look up any Bosch, Continental, Delphi or Denso number in our free ECU number lookup to see the ECU family and the vehicles it was fitted to.

3. Most of the work is recovery and replacement, not tuning

By file type, the aftermarket is dominated by factory flash containers and original reads. Tuning is a small slice; the bulk of the work is keeping cars on the road.

File type Files Share
FRF / SGO flash containers 20,892 57%
Original (stock) files 11,668 32%
Immo off 1,519 4%
Chip tuning (stage 1) 560 2%
Virgin 503 1%
Other (gearbox, EGR, DPF, airbag and more) 1,693 5%

In other words, almost 90% of ECU work is original or flash files for recovery, replacement and reprogramming. Immobiliser work (immo off and virgin files) is a steady 5%, and emissions and tuning make up the rest.

4. The tools of the trade

Where a reading tool is recorded, these dominate the bench. Alientech’s KESS and the Magic/FLEX platform lead, with PCM Flash and New Trasdata close behind.

Rank Tool Files read
1 Alientech KESS V2 3,646
2 Magic / FLEX 2,479
3 PCM Flash 1,720
4 New Trasdata 1,207
5 KTAG 535

5. The most-serviced models

By number of ECU files, the most-worked vehicles are the VW Golf (688), Audi A4 (610), VW Passat (481), VW Transporter (409) and Audi A6 (343): once again, VAG diesels lead the field.

What it means

For independent workshops the data confirms what the bench already shows: a VAG-and-Bosch world, where most ECU jobs are recovery, replacement and immobiliser work rather than tuning. For anyone sourcing ECU files, the long tail is enormous: tens of thousands of hardware and software combinations, most of them low-volume, which is exactly why a searchable library and good number decoding matter. If you have a dump in hand, our free ECU file analyzer reads the hardware and software numbers straight out of the file.

Methodology

Figures are counts from the AutoECUFile catalogue of 36,835 published ECU files, as of October 2026, grouped by product attributes (brand, ECU model, file type, read tool and vehicle). Brand totals merge duplicate labels where the same marque appears under more than one spelling. These figures are free to cite with a link to AutoECUFile.
